A reputable waste managment contractor will ensure that you are offered the most cost effective service, others have only their own interest at heart and will maximise profits at your expense . However, the majority will not effectively address the potential in waste minimisation through recycling and volume reduction. Savings can be made by recycling waste  and reducing volume, wherever appropriate, with the resulting savings from less number of collections and reduced amounts being disposed of.

Landfill Tax

Waste Producers have been aware that landfill tax, now at £15.00 per tonne, has been increasing annually by £1.00 per tonne for the past 10 years. Commencing in April 2005, that increase rises to a minimum of £3.00 per tonne per annum for the following 5 years, resulting in a minimum charge of £30.00 per tonne in 2009.

This tax is of course over and above the cost of disposal charged by the landfill operators. Depending upon the geographic location within the UK, these prices vary, but a figure in excess of £35.00 per tonne, including tax is probably not unreasonable for contractors to charge their customers. What could overall costs be in 2009. Rumour has it that because of the impending changes in landfill legislation, 2005 could see an additional £3.00 per tonne over and above the same figure from landfill tax.

Recycling

The landfill tax levy was imposed to encourage waste producers to segregate and recycle as much waste as possible and reduce that going directly to landfill. Many companies producing waste which could be recycled e.g. waste packaging, have considered that the cost of segregation and recycling outweighed the cost of disposal and consequently have not monitored this element of their waste management.

Depending upon the amount of waste generated, a range of waste balers and compactors are available to accomodate waste such as cardboard and polythene, and many other types.
